Letter to Governor from the S.A.V.E. Lake George Partnership

February 4, 2014

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

State Capitol

Albany, NY 12224

Dear Governor Cuomo:

On behalf of the S.A.V.E. Lake George Partnership and all who care about this priceless natural treasure, we thank you for your leadership and vision in advancing the mandatory Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Program this year.  Your commitment to program funding and implementation is fundamental to protecting Lake George from the spreading menace of invasives. The skyrocketing costs of treating invasives after they are introduced make prevention the only real means of protection.

As you know, the S.A.V.E. Partnership represents public and private leaders—including municipal officials, conservation groups, scientists, and businesses—around Lake George who have committed to paying half the cost of the prevention program over the next two years. Moreover, S.A.V.E. has made clear its intent to work with the Lake George Park Commission and the Department of Environmental Conservation to help expedite program implementation and ensure effective protection. This includes around the clock coverage at public launch facilities.  Especially in this pilot phase of the program, it is crucial that we achieve our prevention goal while also gaining vital information on boater access demands to shape a permanent program that really works.

Because of your leadership and partnership, there is no question that Lake George is leading the way in demonstrating what it will take to save our precious waters from aquatic invasives—uncompromising commitment from all quarters. We will not get a second chance to get this right and we are truly fortunate to have the State’s leadership in responding to the gravity of the moment. Let Lake George serve as an example to feed formation of a statewide prevention strategy that can make New York a model for the nation.

As the economic engine for the entire region, nothing will deliver better returns than our shared investment in the future health of Lake George. We are proud to be an investor in the AIS Prevention Program and wish to commend your leadership team. From DEC Commissioner Joe Martens to Park Commission Executive Director Dave Wick and the Lake George Park Commission as a whole, their dedication bodes very well, indeed, for lasting Lake protection.  With deepest gratitude,

Very truly yours,

Mayor Robert Blais, Honorary S.A.V.E. Chairman
